Jazz Americans in Paris | Short Film

1,960

For over sixty years Paris has been home to many fine American jazz musicians attracted by the European way of life, better working opportunities and French audiences’ appreciation of jazz.

In September 2018 film-maker and musician Martin Goodsmith and music consultant Adam Sieff travelled to Paris to meet some of the American jazz musicians who currently live and work there.

The occasion was a memorial concert at the Sunset-Sunside Jazz Club in the Rue des Lombards for double bassist Wayne Dockery, a key member of Archie Shepp’s quartet for 20 years. Friends and colleagues from the American jazz community took part alongside some of Paris’ finest musicians.

The following evening, the celebrated pianist Kirk Lightsey and his wife Natalie threw a small party at their central Paris apartment which was attended by many of those who had contributed the previous night.

The resulting eleven minute film is an introduction to how these expat American jazz musicians feel about living and playing jazz music in the ‘City of Lights’.

There are interviews with Kirk Lightsey, pianist and composer Katy Roberts, trumpeter Rasul Siddik and double bassist Darryl Hall as well concert organiser Jean Szlamowicz from Spirit of Jazz. Their thoughts are interspersed with live clips of the above which also include tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford and drummer Doug Sides.
